Τhose who are fans of the ’60s psychedelic-era style of music would appreciate attending a concert by the San Francisco-based band, Moonalice.

Moonalice consists of seven seasoned and talented musicians who are all bass players, but play multiple instruments and switch from one to another throughout their performances.

Moonalice was in Coos Bay, Ore., at The Green Spot on Dec. 5, 2008 and returned for an additional show on Aug. 22, 2009. Introduced by emcee Jack Carrerow, a local musician and writer, as “the band time forgot”, Moonalice is a band that appears to be having a lot of fun while doing what they love best. The band even incorporates “The Moonalice Legend”, a self-invented Native American folklore into its show and Web site.

In August, Moonalice member Roger McNamee read from “The Legend,” with little diddies such as one about “Coos Bay and the Elevated Railroad.” The audience was also treated to a synchronized light show reminiscent of those from the Fillmore, the Avalon and Winterland.

The band released its debut album on Feb. 24, 2009.

“Moonalice’s new album and music will delight the ears of music lovers who favor the classic warmth of the vinyl LP era,” a press release said.

The studio album, live DVDs, other Moonalice products and the full Moonalice Legend can be viewed on www.moonalice.com, as well as the band’s tour dates.

According to the band’s myspace, www.myspace.com/moonalice, “It is said by those who say such things that the day will come when all members of the tribe will play bass together. And on that day the notion of low will be taken to new depths. Or possibly the notion of depth taken to new lows. As with all things, it’s really a matter of perspective.”

Moonalice is:

• Sir Sinjin Moonalice aka Pete Sears (bass, keyboards, accordion, guitar, vocals) has over 40 years experience in the music industry, having played with Rod Stewart, John Lee Hooker, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, various members of the Grateful Dead, and was a member of the Flying Other Brothers.

• Jésus H. Moonalice aka Barry Sless (bass, guitar, pedal steel, vocals) is a founding member of the David Nelson Band; has previously performed with Cowboy Jazz, Kingfish, David Nelson Band, Flying Other Brothers; and still plays with Phil Lesh & Friends.

• Blue Moonalice aka Ann McNamee (bass, keyboards, percussion, vocals) has a doctorate in music theory, as well as over 100 self-penned songs in her portfolio. She has been a member of the Flying Other Brothers since 1999.

• Chubby Wombat Moonalice aka Roger McNamee (bass, guitar, vocals) has rocked by night with the Flying Other Brothers, while a day gig finds him teaming with U2’s Bono as a founding member of venture capital firm Elevation Partners.

• White Cloud Moonalice aka John Molo (bass and drums) has played with a variety of bands, combos, and soloists, including Bruce Hornsby and the Range, The Other Ones, Phil Lesh and Friends, Delaney Bramlett, John Fogerty, Keller Williams, Mike Watt, Paul Kelly, David Nelson, Jemimah Puddleduck and Modereko.

More Drumbeats:

• Stewie Moonalice aka Curt Bisquera (Relief Drummer) has worked with Josh Groban, Mick Jagger, Seal, Elton John and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers among others.

• DawnMan Moonalice aka Jimmy Sanchez (Drummer Emeritus) is a veteran player who has backed Boz Scaggs, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John and many others worldwide, and was also a member of the Flying Other Brothers.

Moonalice legend speaks of a mysterious 7th player – a bass player, naturally – who possessed prodigious talent. The spirit of Yggdrassil Moonalice inhabits all Moonalice gigs. And some times, when the stars, sun, and Moonalice align, Yggdrassil appears in body. And when he does, the tribe rejoices, according to http://www.myspace.com/moonalice.

• Yggdrassil Moonalice aka Jack Casady (BASS!!!!) is considered one of the foremost bassists in rock, both as a member of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, as well as having played with Jimi Hendrix on “Voodoo Chile.”

(Casady did not appear in Coos Bay.)
