Of musicians and Monkees

Ahhhh, it’s THE Monkees. All you baby boomers remember the albums, the posters, the TV show and the sighs [for those of us who were young girls]. In this issue, Gig has the privilege to interview one of the Monkees, Micky Dolenz, who is coming to the Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City for Teen Idol shows on Dec. 4-5. “I’m a Believer!”

Speaking of believing, “I believe in music,” those were some of the words in one of Dale Inskeep and his band’s new original songs they played at the High Tide Inn in Charleston last Saturday night. The band, consisting of: Dale, front man and rhythm guitar; David Ford, lead guitar; Carmen Matthews, bass; and Tom Beckstrom, drums, has been performing at the Charleston venue for four years.

It was a warm and fuzzy evening, getting an unexpected chance to take a breather and drink a beer while listening to a few songs recently recorded on Inskeep’s latest CD, Three Hands on the Wheel, released in November. A little girl bebopped in her seat to “I get tired of the cold” and the aforementioned song Dream Every Time [I believe in music, I believe in life] is one of those ballads that can bring tears to your eyes if you really listen.

Ironically, the week before at Rogers Zoo we interviewed members of the band, Los Panchos — Pancho Castilla [guitarist and lead vocalist], Steve Diggle [bassist and backup singing] and Adam DeMarzo [drummer]. Los Panchos is a new band that formed in May of this year. Also an original band, Los Panchos performs dub music [revisions of existing songs sometimes into a separate genre]. In Los Panchos’ case, the band drifted into the reggae genre. There will be more about Los Panchos in the next issue, but interestingly, DeMarzo happens to be a student of Tom Beckstrom, and a fairly new student. It must say something of Beckstrom’s abilities, since a three-year student of his is playing out in a band.

Another of the area’s shining stars is Nichole Cooper who belted out her usual best with her new band the New Hot Shots at Walt’s Pourhouse during the shooting of her musical video Saturday night. Nichole really knows how to get the room hopping as it was standing room only on the dance floor. Should make a great video. Way to go, Nichole.

On Nov. 20, we caught The Worn Out Frets performing at Joe’s Honkytonk in Coos Bay. They were great and brought a whole crowd of fans along with them. The acoustic duo is featured in this magazine, along with a story on Riptide, another group that just proves that the South Coast is brimming with talent.

Can’t wait till next weekend.

What a long strange trip it’s been…
