On Dec. 10, Java Jones Coffee House will be the featured business in ArtWalk!, a gallery walk in the Coos Bay/North Bend/Charleston area that takes place the second Thursday of each month.

Java Jones owner Laurie Moore, whose own ceramic artwork is on display at her Empire venue, says as the featured business she will serve special drinks, a variety of appetizers, and wine.

“We make quite a deal out of it,” Moore said.

Musical acts also are part of the walk, with The Worn Out Frets the featured band at Java Jones. The duo has a following there, since that is where they began playing out a couple of years ago and still perform at least once a week, so they are sure to draw a crowd.

ArtWalk!, a self-directed tour of art displays, culture and gourmet food in downtown North Bend, Pony Village Mall, Coos Bay, Empire and Charleston, began in 2003, according to current Coos Bay/North Bend ArtWalk! Association President Barbara Mahon.

“It began with the North Bend group,” Mahon said. “We opened our gallery [Artists Loft Gallery in Pony Village Mall] in August ‘03 and I think ArtWalk! started that fall. It started in North Bend and just gradually grew to include Coos Bay and Charleston.”

Attendees can drive from gallery to gallery since all areas hold ArtWalk! on the same night. The association meets once a month the Friday of the week following ArtWalk! to discuss the coming month.

Mahon said there are specific guidelines for becoming part of ArtWalk!

“To be in ArtWalk!, you have to be associated with art in some way, have a business and have some cultural benefit,” she said.

Mahon, a pianist, will be playing Christmas music on the keyboard at her business during the Dec. 10 ArtWalk! that starts about 4 p.m. and continues through the evening. At her Artists Loft Gallery, featured artists will be all the gallery’s artists during the month of December, with smaller, more affordable pieces available for sale during the holidays.

For more information and the current list of businesses participating in ArtWalk!, and map, contact president Barbara Mahon who represents Pony Village Mall at 756-4088, association vice-president and North Bend businesses rep Beccy Kaneen, owner of Crystal Dolphin, at 756-1989.

Irene Sund is the association treasurer, Mahon said, and the group is currently without a secretary.
